Elaine and Shibbie felt there were a few things that needed tackling at their Mangakino home, but top of the list was their roof.
“When you’re sitting in the lounge and you feel a drop on your leg – that wasn’t nice,” Elaine said.
At the suggestion of their daughter-in-law, Elaine attended a talk with Habitat for Humanity’s operations manager, Alayne. There, she learnt all about Habitat’s Home Repair programme, which offers interest-free loans of up to $20,000 for critical repairs and maintenance.
“We came along and listened and I was just rapt straight away. For the first thing, they help kaumatua and those in need, plus the fact it was interest free, that struck me even more so. You didn’t feel you were burdened with all these extras on top.”
Elaine put in an application to have her roof replaced and was ecstatic to learn it had been accepted.
Habitat builders Adam and Kevin got stuck in replacing the entire roof, with occasional breaks for a cup of tea with Elaine and Shibbie.
Elaine said they just became like family to her.
“It was nice, I like people to feel at home, and I like to share that with others. The guys were fantastic.”
The first bout of rain after the repairs was the test, and Elaine is happy to report the roof is doing its job.
“You notice the difference straight away. I can sit in the lounge without rain dripping down on my feet or having to put the bucket out here. I say to everyone, no more raining inside the house!”
Elaine’s advice to everyone is to follow through with Habitat, “because you’ve got an interest free loan, with [a certain] amount of time to pay it – that’s what will help so many people.
“I was really rapt with the repayment plan, because we’re only on a certain income and we’re budgeting the best we can, so to have something like that – it takes a lot of pressure off.”

Donations over $5.00 are tax deductible. You can submit your receipt to IRD website, and they will process your tax rebate.
