Why I’ve left a gift in my Will to Habitat

I’ve volunteered for Habitat for many years and have seen first-hand the life-changing impact its work has, both in New Zealand and overseas.

A decent, Warm, dry and affordable place to live is the foundation from which individuals and families can thrive. It all starts with a place to call home.

Which is why I have left a gift in my Will to Habitat.

How to include

Your Will reflects who you are, what matters most to you and the legacy you want to be remembered for - well into the future. A Will empowers you to choose how your assets can benefit your loved ones and make a meaningful difference to families in need.  Whether you're updating your Will or creating one for the first time our  how-to guide has the information you need to create or update your Will.

When preparing your Will, we advise seeking legal advice from a solicitor, when drafting your Will or amending to include a gift to Habitat. The NZ Law Society and your local Citizen's Advice Bureau can help you find a solicitor if you don't already have one.

There are two main ways of including a gift in your Will. Your legal advisor can ensure your Will is valid and clearly sets out how your estate is to be distributed according to your wishes and circumstances:

  • Residual - remainder of your estate after taking care of your loved ones.
  • Percentage - a percentage of the value of your estate.

We suggest the following wording:

“I give to Habitat for Humanity New Zealand, Charity Registration Number CC 28026, the residue of my estate (or---------------% of my estate) for its general purposes and declare that the official receipt of the Chief Executive Officer or other authorized officer shall be full and sufficient discharge for my Trustees.”

How will my gift be used? 

Your gift will be used to support a range of programmes to support families in need of decent and affordable housing. This includes: 

  • Healthy homes programme
  • Home repair programme
  • Workshops upskilling homeowners 
  • Community-led initiatives to address inadequate shelter and climate change in the Pacific
  • Upskilling in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) practices

How do I include a gift in my Will?
You can include your gift when you update your Will or create one for the first time. We recommend you seek legal advice when drafting, updating or amending your Will to include a gift to Habitat for Humanity New Zealand.


Can I support a specific project with my gift?

We understand that you may wish to direct your gift to a particular purpose. An unrestricted gift to “Where most needed” allows Habitat for Humanity New Zealand to fill the most critical gaps across our projects so that this vital work continues for all those who need it.

Our areas of work sometimes change so this means that as our work evolves to serve local communities your gift can evolve with it.

Can I make a donation over the phone or via internet banking?

If you wish to make a donation via credit card over the phone, please phone us on (09) 579 4111

If you wish your donation to go to a specific appeal please include in the payment Reference

Will I receive a receipt for my donation?

If you make a donation on our website your receipt will be emailed to you automatically.

If you choose to donate via internet banking, you will receive your receipt via email 1-2 days after you make your donation. If no email address is given, your receipt will be posted to the address given.

Is my receipt tax deductible?

Donations over $5.00 are tax deductible. You can submit your receipt to IRD website, and they will process your tax rebate.

How can I gift my tax credit to Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand has partnered with Supergenerous making it easier for your generosity to support our mission.

All your charitable donations are tax deductible. By claiming your end-of-year tax credit and gifting it back to Habitat, you’re making your original donation to us go even further.

Supergenerous is authorised by the IRD to claim your tax credit on your behalf, and donate back to your chosen charity.

Can I donate monthly?

Yes, you can give regular monthly donations to your chose Habitat for Humanity appeal. Just select 'give monthly' when processing your donation payment.

How do I change or cancel my monthly gift?

You can change, cancel or suspend your monthly donation at any time. Please email us at info@habitat.org.nz, or phone us on (09) 579 4111.

What day of the month will my credit card be charged?

Your credit card will be charged once you submit your first monthly gift, and future donations will be made on that same day going forward. If you wish to change your payment date to better suit your pay cycle, please get in touch via information@habitat.org.nz, or phone us on (09) 579 4111 and we can easily action that for you.

Will I receive an annual tax receipt?

Yes, you will receive an annual tax receipt at the close of the financial year, recording all donations.

Can I set up a monthly donation via my internet banking?
