Devastating flash flood leaves thousands of families in need across Nepal

Thousands of families in Nepal are facing the loss of homes, livelihoods and loved ones following a devastating flash flood that swept through parts of central Nepal on 26 August 2026. Communities in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts have been among the hardest hit, with homes, roads and bridges destroyed as floodwaters tore through the region.

Many families have lost homes, belongings and livelihoods in a matter of hours. With ongoing monsoon conditions and critical infrastructure damaged, access to safe shelter is now one of the most urgent needs.

Habitat for Humanity Nepal has activated its Humanitarian Response Team and is coordinating with government authorities, the Shelter Cluster and humanitarian partners to assess needs and plan a shelter-focused response.

Habitat Nepal is delivering a three-phase response, beginning with the distribution of Emergency Shelter Kits to 1,000 households. Habitat Nepal already has 700 kits ready for dispatch, with a further 300 being procured. Future phases are expected to include transitional shelters, shelter repair support and longer-term reconstruction, depending on the scale of need and available funding.

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand has a long-standing relationship with Habitat Nepal, having supported communities recovering from previous disasters, including the 2015 earthquake and the devastating flood of October 2025. Together, we remain committed to supporting affected communities as they recover, rebuild and strengthen their resilience for the future.
