30 Sep 2026
Scam alert 1

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand is aware of a scam involving fake Facebook ads and websites that misuse the Habitat for Humanity name and logo to promote home repair programmes and housing assistance. This content is not authorised by Habitat for Humanity New Zealand.

These advertisements have appeared on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube and often promote services including:

  • Home Repair Programmes
  • Plumbing Repairs
  • Window Replacements
  • Roof Repairs or Roof Replacements
  • Housing Assistance
  • Habitat Houses for Sale
  • First Home Buyer Support

The advertisements typically direct people to websites that are not affiliated with Habitat for Humanity. These websites may ask individuals to provide personal information, property details, identification documents, or financial information.

We are concerned that these scams may be attempting to collect information that could be used for identity theft or other fraudulent activity.

How to Spot a Fake Habitat Advertisement

1. The ad is not from an official Habitat for Humanity account
Always check who is running the advertisement before clicking on it.

We have identified scam advertisements being promoted by pages that are not connected to Habitat for Humanity, including accounts with names such as:

  • Capital Flow
  • Fintreat Solution
  • BrainFuel Daily
2. The social media page looks suspicious

Warning signs include pages that:

  • Were created recently
  • Have very few followers or limited posting history
  • Use AI-generated images
  • Do not clearly identify themselves as Habitat for Humanity
  • Contain poor spelling or inconsistent branding
3. The ad creates a sense of urgency

Scammers often encourage people to act quickly by claiming that:

  • Applications are closing soon
  • Funding is running out
  • Places are limited
  • Immediate action is required to secure assistance
If you see these messages, take time to verify the information before responding.

4. The website is not habitat.org.nz

Official Habitat for Humanity New Zealand information is available only through our website: habitat.org.nz

Be cautious of any website using a different domain name or asking you to apply for Habitat programmes through an unfamiliar website.

5. The ad asks you to submit personal information

Be cautious of advertisements asking you to complete an application form for:

  • Home Repair Programmes
  • Plumbing Repairs
  • Window Replacements
  • Roof Repairs
  • Housing Grants
  • Housing Assistance
especially if the application is hosted on a website that is not habitat.org.nz, unless you have clicked on a link from our official Habitat website.

What Should I Do?

If you see a suspicious advertisement:

  • Do not click on any links.
  • Do not provide personal, financial, or property information.
  • Check whether the advertisement was posted by an official Habitat for Humanity social media account.
  • Visit habitat.org.nz directly to verify any programme or service.
  • Contact us through our website if you are unsure whether an advertisement is genuine.
  • Report the advertisement to the social media platform where you found it.
