In the heart of Kensington, Whangārei, a new community is taking shape, one built on connection, shared spaces, and the promise of a better future. Sixteen whānau have now received the keys to their brand-new homes, marking a significant milestone in their journey toward homeownership through Habitat’s Progressive Home Ownership Programme.
The official opening of Keyte Street was marked by a moving tuwhera (opening) ceremony led by Te Parawhau. Each whare (home) was lovingly prepared, lifting the tapu (sacredness) and creating a safe, nurturing foundation for families to begin their next chapter.
This new development is more than just homes, it’s a vibrant neighbourhood where people from all walks of life come together. Among the new residents are single mums and dads, nurses, labourers, builders, and youth workers. One separated couple has each been selected for a home within the development. Their preschool child can now safely walk between both parents’ homes, an outcome that speaks to the inclusive and family-centred nature of this community.
For over 30 years, Habitat’s rent-to-buy model has helped families turn rental payments into equity, making homeownership achievable and sustainable. Keyte Street is a place where people are connected, not just by proximity, but by shared values and mutual support. It’s a place where children can play safely, where whānau can thrive, and where the dream of homeownership becomes a reality.
