Ethiopia is one of the ten poorest nations in the world. Over half of the population is illiterate. In spite of its arid climate, the economy relies heavily on agriculture, and the country is one of Africa’s leading coffee producers. However, many Ethiopians still depend on food aid.

Almost 85 percent of houses in Ethiopia are made of mud and stick or thatch walls, which collapse easily. Homes are often cramped, with dirt floors, leaking roofs and no windows or doors, leaving occupants vulnerable to adverse weather conditions, insects and rodents.

Moreover, a staggering 90 percent of the population has no access to decent sanitation facilities, and 73 percent of the population does not have safe drinking water, causing disease to run rampant.

Substandard housing not only has an adverse effect on health, but also on education, job performance and overall quality of life. Most families living in such conditions have little chance of improving their situations without assistance, and life is a daily battle for most.

I was priviledged to be a member (and Team Nurse) of Team Kiwi Ethiopia 2007 (the first Kiwi team there) and a great bunch we were ranging in age from 21 to 73. We spent a couple of days in Addis Ababa then off to our new home for the next two weeks and the build site in Jimma, South West of Addis.

The team got more done than was ever expected, and with nobody really ready to leave, the dedication of 11 houses came on our last day. The whole experience was very humbling to see these very deserving people who were so grateful that we were able to be there to help by providing labour at no cost-and also we could share our cultures and laughs.

I have been asked to be Team Kiwi 10 nurse this year and have made a commitment to return to Ethiopia and get my hands dirty in assisting with getting a race of beautiful people into better housing.

The houses we will be building are made from Eucalyptus framing on a concrete and stone foundation. A mixture of mud and Tef (a local grass left from the main grain crop)called Chika is then applied to the interior by hand and a couple of days later to the exterior. Once that has dried for a day chicken mesh is nailed on then a plaster render coat is applied.

I am endeavouring to raise $6000.00 to get myself there but also would like to achieve more than that to assist others that may not be in a financial position to pay their full way either. Myself and the other team members are giving our time and energy to build housing and each of our small contributions make a big effort. All I am asking from you is for many to give a little bit and it will all add up to a lot to help Habitat get people into better housing.

I thank you and will update this page regularly before and after the build.

Any donations made will be transferred directly to Habitat for Humanity NZ account. A tax receipt for your donation will also be issued immediately.

God bless you and
Beutam Ameuseugenallo
