Sri Lanka? I hear you say. Not your usual holiday destination. This isn't a holiday, it's a mission.
I know nothing about Sri Lanka and that is part of the experience. NZers aren't exposed to anything that happens there through our media. As a fellow small country, and as one of the worlds fastest growing economies, I think we have a lot to learn from them.
The last 30 years have been plagued with social conflict and natural disasters. This has created a society full of marginalisation and unrest. The tension has been high and so has the level of poverty; with close to 300,000 people being displaced when the unrest ended in 2009.
This is all beginning to change.
The Reconciliation Build is about bringing together the Sinhalese, Tamil, Malay and other minor religions, to build safety, security and most importantly, community.
Over 300 people will be converging on Negombo to build 24 houses for a community. This is the little part that I can play to help the Sri Lankan community.
The little part you can play is to help me get there.
The donations all go toward building supplies, my airfares and accommodation whilst building, and a $1000 donation to Habitat for Humanity.
All donations are tax deductible, keep that in mind fellow business owners.
