The Chairman's Update - March 2012

As we complete this build at 22A  Banks Street I am yet again amazed at what can be achieved when people of all walks of life put their minds, talents, resources, and raw physical work together toward a common goal. In this case a beautifully finished 3 bedroom home for the Parata family.

I believe we see a truly tangible outpouring of what God refers to as His Grace Toward His people, as such a wide part of this community contribute to the well being of a family by offering a hand up into home ownership – a place that will become their refuge, their shelter, the place where they ‘do family’, offer hospitality and develop the essentials to be able to contribute back to those around them.

It was with some trepidation that we took on this section, steeply sloping and half covered in a jungle of trees, vines and overgrown vegetation and rubbish. Then planning the layout of the house was complicated by easements across the section and uncertainty as to the depth down to good ground for foundations.

Thanks to John Hermann we soon had the correct boundary pegs in place and Woody worked his magic from the seat of his digger to transform the wilderness into this wonderful section we have today. A scary sight was seeing Brian Martin negotiating the steep drive and overhead wires with his pile driving machinery and the enormous seven metre poles that were to be driven.

They disappeared into the soft soil very quickly but soon found their set close to floor height, and build 29 was underway.

A huge thanks to the many volunteers that then proceeded to turn sticks of wood, bits of metal, and all sorts of other products into this beautiful well finished home under the ever watchful eye of our master builder and supervisor Ian Cheyne. Particular thanks to Ash Howan, Oliver Roberts, Paul Butterworth, Kevin Potroz, for their continuity of work, and Mark Roche for helping bring the average age of volunteers under 70!

Behind the scenes  thanks  to Cameron Wilson who prepared the build schedule and kept the flow of materials appearing on site.

Dow AgroSciences have partnered with us as our major funder for this project. Our sincere thanks to you for your continuing contribution into our community.  It is this goodwill and the contribution of all our supporters mentioned later in this booklet that allow Habitat  to continue on our mission to give all people in this world a simple decent affordable place to live.
