Global Village Fact Sheet

Team Participants

Global Village teams are usually made up of 10 to 25 participants. Each team is recruited and led by one or two trained volunteer Team Leaders, who are supported by Global Village staff.

Individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate in the Global Village programme. No building experience is required! Participants under the age of 18 must receive approval from the host affiliate and be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or be part of a chaperoned school, faith or institutional group. There is no maximum age limit. Participants must be reasonably fit and in good health, as work assignments often require strenuous manual labour.

Itinerary and Trip Length

Most trips are about two weeks long, and include eight to 10 days of building. The remaining time may be spent exploring the local area, enjoying cultural activities, and travelling around the host country.

Each trip is planned specifically with the team. Each team member can expect a unique set of experiences and memories. Habitat for Humanity and your Team Leader will create your itinerary together and send it to you before you depart.

Trip Cost

The cost of a Global Village trip includes your flights, accommodation, meals, transportation, medical and evacuation insurance, and a minimum donation of NZD $650 (or $550 for youth) to Habitat for Humanity. Visas, vaccinations, cancellation and baggage insurance, and personal spending money are not included. Your team leader can give you more details.

House Construction Work

You could be mixing concrete or mortar, digging foundations, making and laying blocks, making window frames, erecting walls, hammering, plastering, painting, or gardening. The work will depend on local construction techniques and the stage of construction when your team arrives. Your team may work on more than one house, and may or may not complete an entire house during your stay.

No building experience is necessary - all you need is enthusiasm and motivation. Local construction supervisors will teach you basic building skills.

Accommodation

This depends on your destination. Accommodations may include a community hall or guesthouse, a basic hotel, or home stays in the village. Be prepared to experience the everyday lifestyle of the local people. There may not always be hot water available; insects may abound; toilet facilities may be a hole in the ground. Have an open mind and a spirit of adventure, and enjoy your once-in-a-lifetime welcome into the local community.

Fundraising Challenge

Habitat for Humanity's vision is a world in which every man, woman, and child has a decent, affordable place to live in dignity and safety. We need funds to make this a reality. You contribute to this vision in three main ways: 1) by volunteering on the building site, 2) by raising awareness of poverty housing issues, and 3) by raising as much money as possible to build Habitat for Humanity homes.

International Travel Documents

In most cases, you must hold a passport which has at least 6 months validity beyond the date you plan to return to New Zealand. Some countries also require a visa. You are responsible for obtaining your visa, if required.

Personal Health and Safety

Work assignments normally involve strenuous physical activity, sometimes at high altitudes or in extreme heat. Team members must be reasonably fit and in good physical health. You are encouraged to consult your doctor or a specialised travel doctor regarding your personal health and recommended vaccinations or medications for the trip.
