About Us

Habitat for Humanity Lower North Island covers from Wanganui in the north, down through the Manawatu, Palmerston North, Horowhenua, Kapiti, Porirua, down to Wellington then up through the Hutt Valley and over the Rimutakas to the Wairarapa. The LNI Affiliate was formed in August 2007 through a merger of the Hutt Valley, Palmerston North and Porirua Affiliates and the Horowhenua sub-group, with the objective of increasing housing outcomes across the region. In our first year of operation, we tripled our housing outcomes.

The LNI Affiliate has a Regional Board, chaired by Neil Macdonald, and a network of local Teams either already established or in the process of being set up. The Board consists of representatives from the local Teams and oversees the governance of the Region, including the overall strategic direction and financial management. The local Teams are the real driving force in the Region, responsible for selecting and nurturing families, fundraising and developing local resources and delivering more housing outcomes. The Board employs a small staff to support the activity of the local Teams and the Region as a whole and to help realise our vision. The staff are based in Porirua and work across the whole Region.

We have active local teams in Horowhenua, Porirua and

Hutt Valley. We are wishing to establish new Teams in

Palmerston North, Wanganui, Kapiti, Wellington and Wairarapa.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are many ways in which you can get involved with Habitat in the Lower North Island, for example:

  • Donate funds to support our local work by contacting our office in Porirua
  • Donate unwanted quality second hand goods for our ReStore
  • Join one of our local Teams to push forward the work locally
  • Volunteer on one of our build projects
  • Take the lead in your place of work to raise a team and funds to support Habitat LNI
  • Get involved in our local fundraising events as an organiser or supporter

We have opportunities for you to get involved in all aspects of our operation, including working with families in housing need, land acquisition, building projects and planning, fundraising and local community liaison.

If you are a qualified tradesperson in any building related area, we would love to hear from you. As we increase the number of families served we need more skilled tradespeople to lead our builds or the teams that work on them. Come for a day, a week or the entire project. We also need more support from architects, draftspeople, surveyors and consultants with expertise in sub-division. We would welcome any help you can give.
