About Us

Habitat for Humanity Tauranga will complete its 13th year in November 2008. It has a “waiting list” at any one time of between 50 and 100 applicant families, and like all voluntary and not-for-profit organisations, competes for funding from recognised sources. It recently offered its 40th partnership to a Western Bay of Plenty family, and currently has secured land for a further nine.Tauranga is located on the East Coast of NZ's North Island. It is famous for its sunshine, harbour, relaxed lifestyle, and connection with the highly popular surf beach Mount Maunganui (or Mauo in Maori). It is one of our most attractive retirement spots, and offers an impressive list of historic places to visit and stories to tell.

However, beneath the glamour and success visible in Tauranga lies the same proportionate set of statistics that poses difficulties in every population centre: beneficiaries and struggling, low income families, unacceptable living conditions, marginalised and homeless people, broken families, and poverty.

When asked about future goals for Habitat Tauranga, Chairman, lawyer Paul Broatch says: “Undoubtedly fundraising. Each family housed means we have had to raise at least $200,000, which is tough going in a competitive situation where every charity is seeking funds from pretty much the same sources. Sausage sizzles don’t do it in this league, and we have to think big to bring in the funds.”

Think Big Fundraisiers

Habitat’s first big fundraiser was its $1,000 Club, to which each supporter loaned $1,000 to the building programme at no interest for up to five years. The project raised over $200,000, much of which turned into donations before the expiry date. Current legislation prevents a repetition, so the affiliate is now looking to other avenues.

The “Trivia Night” was a huge success, raising over $20,000 for our affiliate.  The evening was full of fun, laughter and spirited bids at auction for such things as an autographed cap from world tennis number one, Roger Federer, and paintings by popular local artists.  The evening was also peppered with quickfire raffles, quizzes and the entertaining wit of M.C. for the night, Grant Nordik. So good was his patter that he even had the 250 strong audience delighting in ‘being fleeced’ for their money.  Due to the success of this years event, we will be holding the Trivia Night annually.
