Habitat for Humanity to celebrate its 316th and 317th Dedication in September
Posted on: 4 September 2008
A Dedication is a ceremony held at the completion of a
build project, to celebrate and acknowledge the works of all the volunteers and
sponsors who have contributed to the construction, and to welcome the new
Partner Family to their home. We are pleased to announce the dedication
of the 37th house in our Tauranga affiliate and the 9th house in Nelson, serving our 316th
and 317th Partner Families in New Zealand. For further information about the
dedications, check out the Local Community pages of Tauranga and Nelson

We need your help!

Earlier this year, our Nelson affiliate dedicated the section for its 9th house, and building commenced onsite in April. The outside of the house is largely completed, but we still need approximately $16,000 worth of items to complete this home for the de Thierry family. These include items like a kitchen, carpet and decking.
We could not have gotten this far without the efforts of the local building team (mostly volunteers), tradespeople, and in particular, a splendid team of 11 Army engineers from Linton Military Camp. We would also like to say thank you to the Noel Leeming team in Nelson who spent a morning putting down the floor, ready for the walls and the roof.
Items Required:| Kitchen | $5500 | Concrete Drive | $1600 |
| Carpet | $1800 | Wardrobe Shelves | $450 |
| Underlay | $600 | Wardrobe Doors | $800 |
| Vinyl | $600 | Underfloor insulation | $1125 |
| Curtains/tracks | $800 | Fence | $600 |
| Stove | $750 | Decking | $500 |
| Trellis | $900 | Clothesline | $200 |

NZ Army partners with Habitat Nelson

The backgrounds of the individuals and groups who volunteer on Habitat for Humanity's build sites are many and varied. Business or corporate groups are often seen enjoying a time of bonding and team building.
In April, a team of engineers from Linton's 25 Engineer Support Squadron were deployed to Nelson to assist with the construction of our latest Habitat home – the 9th for the Nelson affiliate. The team of eleven (carpenters, an electrician, and a driver) spent nine days working with our partner family, and a large number of other volunteers, to build the home. The walls were built, the roof put on, and construction will be completed over the winter months as funding allows.
Usually New Zealand Army engineers are seen on reconstruction tasks, rebuilding infrastructure in operational environments such as Afghanistan.
"As well as providing valuable construction training, practical tasks at home provide an excellent opportunity for our junior leaders, both officers and soldiers, to plan, coordinate resources, and command soldiers as part of their leadership and professional career development," says Major Paul Hayward.
Being involved in a Habitat build replicated in many ways the team environment that the engineers will face in their active operations.
If you have a group interested in volunteering on a Habitat build, please contact your local affiliate. Practical building experience is not always required – what is needed is enthusiasm and a desire to contribute.
